Self-Lubricating Bearings and Bushings for Subsea Robotics
Subsea robotic systems operate in one of the harshest environments on earth—thousands of meters underwater, exposed to corrosive saltwater, extreme pressure, and long hours of precision work. When a Gulf of America operator needed replacement bushings and thrust washers for its hydraulic manipulator fleet, extended supplier lead times left critical wear components unavailable when maintenance windows opened. The company turned to TriStar for quality parts made to spec, in stock, and ready to ship.
The Wear Components That Keep Robotic Arms Moving

Hydraulic manipulator arms are the workhorses of subsea ROV’s (Remotely Operated Vehicles)—multi-axis systems that grasp, cut, torque, and manipulate equipment at depths where human divers cannot operate. Every joint contains bearings and bushings that cycle continuously under 3,000 psi hydraulic pressure. Many systems are deliberately designed with sacrificial wear components, polymer bushings and soft-metal bearings engineered to absorb damage and protect more expensive actuators and structures. Smart design, but it means these parts are true consumables: replaced routinely between deployments and sometimes swapped on deck between operations.
Materials Engineered for Extreme Environments
Not every bearing material survives at depth. Components must resist hydrostatic pressure exceeding 300 bar, tolerate chloride corrosion, and often operate with seawater as the only available lubricant. TriStar supplies several material families proven in deepwater service: Rulon filled-PTFE grades for low-friction joint surfaces, Ultracomp composites for high-load pivot bushings, CJ wound composite bearings for actuator supports, and phenolic-backed PTFE thrust washers (our Ultraflon TB150 line) for managing axial loads. All are self-lubricating, dimensionally stable under pressure, and compatible with standard subsea hydraulic fluids.
Spec-Matched Components, Fleet-Scale Inventory
We work with operators and service companies to identify the specific components in their maintenance kits, matching dimensions, materials, and tolerances to original specifications. For the Gulf operator, that meant thrust washers from our Saint-Gobain inventory, custom-machined Ultracomp bushings for pivot joints, and Rulon wear rings for hydraulic actuators. As the exclusive North American distributor for Saint-Gobain's Rulon and Meldin product lines, TriStar maintains the inventory depth to support fleet-scale operations—not just one-off repairs.
Supporting Deepwater Operations Worldwide
Whether you're running subsea robotic systems in the Gulf of America, West Africa, or the North Sea, TriStar can help you build a spares strategy that keeps equipment operating without extended wait times for critical components. If you're looking to evaluate material alternatives or supplement existing inventory with qualified equivalents—contact our engineering team with your specifications. We'll help identify the right materials for your application.
