Surface modification, simplified

Surface modification is the combination of physics and chemistry working together to change materials and enhance surface properties. In medical terms, this can mean altering the surface properties of plastic to better accept drugs, or to improve biocompatibility during surgery and recovery.

Our client, a leader in the clinical translation of medical technologies, contacted us to help them modify the surface of their reel-to-reel devices used in prenatal blood filtering systems. Their devices are used to improve the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen, and provide a reliable means of fetal circulatory support.

Plasma, precisely

Our team employed our plasma treatment to change the surface tension of the client’s plastic materials. One clear advantage of using plasma is the enhanced control of treatment conditions relating to gas flow and pressure. With plasma, we were able to functionalize the client’s plastic surface for improved molecular adhesion.
